Mounjaro Hair Loss: What You Need to Know

Mounjaro hair loss has become a growing concern as weight-loss injections move into the mainstream, with UK use now estimated at around 1.6 million adults, with Mounjaro the most commonly reported option. Hair loss is officially listed as a common side effect when Mounjaro is used for weight management, although the precise cause is not fully understood. Rapid weight loss, eating less and the physical stress of change may all contribute, sometimes triggering temporary shedding known as telogen effluvium.

Can Mounjaro Cause Hair Loss?

Mounjaro was originally developed for type 2 diabetes. Like semaglutide—the ingredient used in Ozempic and Wegovy—tirzepatide was also found to affect appetite and weight, leading to its use in weight management. And yes, hair loss can happen while taking Mounjaro for weight management.

In the landmark SURMOUNT weight-loss studies, around 5% of participants taking tirzepatide reported hair loss, compared with 1% receiving a placebo. These trials included adults both with and without type 2 diabetes, so the findings relate to Mounjaro’s use for weight management across both groups. Importantly, while the results revealed a clear association, there is currently no evidence that tirzepatide directly damages hair follicles. So, at least for now, the link remains something of a mystery.

Why Might Hair Shedding Happen?

One possible explanation is telogen effluvium. This happens when a physical or emotional shock disrupts the natural hair growth cycle, causing more hairs than usual to move into the resting and shedding phases together.

Weight loss and dieting are recognised triggers. Weight loss itself can place considerable stress on the body and disrupt the normal hair-growth cycle. A 2024 clinical investigation documented telogen effluvium following weight loss, supporting the view that rapid or substantial weight loss may contribute to increased shedding.

Changes in appetite can also make it harder for some people to get enough protein, iron and other important nutrients. However, this does not mean everyone taking Mounjaro will become deficient—or that every case of hair loss is telogen effluvium.

Our earlier guide explores the wider relationship between weight-loss injections and hair loss.

What Does Mounjaro Hair Loss Look Like?

A 2025 analysis found that people taking tirzepatide had a greater risk of being diagnosed with telogen effluvium than those using other weight-loss medications. This does not prove that Mounjaro directly causes the condition, but it provides another useful clue about the type of hair loss some users experience.

Telogen effluvium generally causes increased shedding from across the scalp, rather than one clearly defined bald patch. You might first notice more hair than usual in the shower, on your brush or collecting on your clothes. The condition often becomes noticeable around three months after a trigger. This does not necessarily mean three months after starting Mounjaro. The trigger can come from a host of other issues. Our guide to sudden hair thinning in women explains some of these possibilities.

Will Your Hair Grow Back?

First, don’t panic. Across the pooled SURMOUNT-1, -2 and -3 study data, most participants who experienced hair loss recovered while continuing treatment. However, recovery can be gradual. Where the shedding is telogen effluvium, the active shedding phase commonly lasts between three and six months. Regrowth may begin during that time, but because hair grows slowly, it can take several more months for its fullness to improve—and considerably longer to regain lost length.

That extended recovery period is why a consistent, holistic routine, combining good nutrition with gentle hair and scalp care, is important while your hair cycle settles.

What Can You Do to Support Your Hair?

  • Speak to your prescriber. Do not stop Mounjaro or change your dose independently. Your prescriber can consider your rate of weight loss, diet, symptoms and other possible causes.
  • Nourish your body. Aim for a balanced diet with suitable sources of nutrients and the key hair vitamins your locks need. A reduced appetite can make this difficult, so a targeted hair supplement can provide convenient, consistent nutritional support alongside your diet.
  • Avoid guessing at deficiencies. Your GP may recommend blood tests if iron deficiency, thyroid problems or another condition is suspected. Read more about iron deficiency and hair loss.
  • Be gentle with your hair. Reduce tight styles, extensions, excessive heat and harsh chemical treatments to help protect existing hair from additional breakage.

If you are worried about hair loss, especially when sudden or severe, then speak to your GP or consult a trichologist.

Frequently Asked Questions: Mounjaro Hair Loss

How common is hair loss on Mounjaro?

In the main weight-management studies, hair loss was reported by around five in every 100 people taking tirzepatide, compared with one in every 100 taking a placebo.

When does Mounjaro hair loss start?

There is no universal timeline. Where the shedding is telogen effluvium, it may appear around three months after the relevant trigger rather than three months after starting Mounjaro.

Is Mounjaro hair loss permanent?

Most affected patients in the trials recovered, but experiences vary. If the cause is telogen effluvium, regaining previous volume may take many months.

Should I stop taking Mounjaro if my hair starts falling out?

Do not stop Mounjaro or change your dose without speaking to your prescriber. They can assess your shedding, investigate other causes and advise you appropriately.

Can supplements support your hair while taking Mounjaro?

Yes. A varied diet remains important, but a well-formulated hair supplement can provide convenient, consistent nutritional support—particularly when changes in appetite make eating as well as usual more difficult.

As Mounjaro is a prescription medicine, check with your GP or pharmacist before adding a new supplement to your routine.
