How To Do A Scalp Facial

Did you know you can give your scalp a facial? Our scalps take a lot of punishment. The natural elements – sun, rain, wind, heat and cold – all take their toll. Add in increasing pollution and the innumerable hair products that can leave build-up in your locks (stand up dry shampoo!), and it is no surprise that scalp health is such an issue for many women. We spend huge amounts of cash on skin products every year: cleansers, moisturisers, serums, lotions and potions. We do the same with hair products. Yet, the skin on our scalp is often one of the most overlooked parts of our bodies.

But we neglect the scalp at our peril.

Keeping it in tip-top condition is a vital part of looking after our hair. With the right scalp treatment, key moisture and oils are retained, circulation is boosted and the growth of stronger, thicker hair is promoted.

If you’ve been neglecting your scalp, or just want to show it some overdue TLC, then you should make a regular scalp facial part of your hair and skin care regimen.

What Is A Scalp Facial?

This scalp treatment has been massively popular in Japan for the best part of twenty years. It is now whooshing across the world. To the uninitiated, it’s a gentle but deep cleanse, exfoliation and massage. It helps to remove dead skin, impurities, excess oil and the build-up of various products. Getting rid of all that gunk unclogs the hair follicles, dealing with problems like dryness, oiliness and flakiness. Hair growth is stimulated, while existing hair looks fuller and more voluminous.

How To Do A Scalp Facial At Home

You can spend a lot of money on getting scalp treatments in salons, but the great news is that you can get excellent results by DIY-ing a scalp facial at home too.

Here’s how:

Step One: Scalp Pre-treatment

Begin with a pre-shampoo scalp treatment – a tonic, oil or scrub. Use the treatment appropriate to your condition. If your scalp feels very oily, use a product to minimise this. If your scalp is itchy and flaky, use one of the many treatments designed to combat this. Whatever the condition of your scalp, use gentle products with natural ingredients. Look out for options using peppermint, tea tree, aloe vera and citrus oils. They will gently cleanse the scalp, de-clogging follicles while stimulating circulation and reducing inflammation. Follow the instructions and apply to wet or dry hair as directed, concentrating on the roots and ensure the whole scalp is covered.

Step Two: Rinse And Shampoo

Jump in the shower and thoroughly rinse out the scalp treatment. Then, work in a gentle, sulphate free shampoo. Look for a product that contains salicylic acid, which is great at exfoliating without being too harsh on the skin. Remember, you want to be concentrating on the roots rather than the tips of your hair. Some experts recommend using a bottle with a special applicator tip which allows you to pour shampoo directly onto your scalp. You can also use a scalp brush. Rinse thoroughly again.

Step Three: Apply a Hair Mask

It’s now time to lock in all the benefits of the scalp facial. To do this, you need to keep your scalp hydrated and nourished. So, for the next step, you need to apply a hair mask. Hair masks are fantastic at helping your scalp and hair hold onto that vital moisture.

Great Hair masks can work magic on all hair types and can be very effective if you have thin or thinning hair. Hair Gain’s new Hair Mask has been formulated to revitalise and nurture your scalp while hydrating and nourishing your hair from root to tip, reducing hair fall and protecting against heat damage. It provides an amazing scalp treatment while deeply conditioning your locks for thicker and stronger hair, that shines with vitality . It’s simple to use and only needs to be left in for 10 minutes to achieve maximum efficacy.

Apply the mask onto your scalp, and distribute it evenly through your hair, from root to tip using our Hair Gain wide tooth comb.

“I started taking Hair Gain 6 months ago and WOW my results have been amazing! So when the Hair mask came out I couldn’t wait to get my hand on it and it didn’t disappoint!

Hair Gain has finally given me the confidence I’ve never had with my hair because it feels so healthy and shiny!

Step Four: Massage

After you’ve applied the hair mask, it’s time for a massage! This will soften your skin cells, provide a light exfoliation and really get the blood flowing. And it’s also supremely relaxing, especially if you can persuade your partner or a friend to do this part. Start at the nape of the neck, and with both hands work your fingers up to the crown. Then knead from ear to ear across the top of your head. Spend a few minutes massaging your scalp, this will allow the mask to penetrate deeply into your scalp.

Step Five: Sit Back And Relax

Leave the treatment on for as per instructions. Wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap if you wish or use the Hair Gain headband to keep your masked hair off your face and neck. Put your feet up with a nice cuppa or glass of vino and relax while the mask gets to work.

Step Six: Rinse Off

When the time is up, once again, rinse thoroughly. Use lukewarm or cool water – the colder the better, this will help lock in the formula and moisture into your hair.

Step Seven: Gentle Drying

After the scalp facial is complete, leave your blow dryer and any other hot styling tools well alone. Heat will simply damage all the gains you’ve just made! Gently dry with a towel, or even better, allow your hair to dry naturally.

Healthy hair begins at the scalp. If you’re neglecting your scalp, you need to start showing it some love with a great scalp treatment. Treat yourself to a scalp facial and lay the foundations for your healthiest hair yet!
